Louis Vuitton’s journey began in 1835 as he moved to Paris from his hometown in Jura, France. He travelled this distance by foot and took up many trades, one of them being a layetier (clothes packer). This experience led him to be the layetier to Napoleon III's wife. From this he learned what made for good luggage and began to design his own; being one of the first to make flat bottomed, stackable suitcases. In 1896 his son created the now famous monogram canvas, and in the 1930’s Vuitton’s grandson expanded the company to various leather goods including handbags.
