The Gucci label began in Florence, Italy in 1921 founded by Guccio Gucci. Gucci had been known as an excellent craftsman working with leather goods and opening a saddle shop in 1906. In the 20’s he began to make leather bags for horsemen, and expanded from there, hiring more craftsmen to his line. While the House of Gucci started as a one man line it became a family business when Gucci’s sons joined the business and they opened stores in Italy and the US. The brand exploded in the 1960’s with many American celebrities toting the handbags, and the introduction of the GG logo after the initials of the founder, Guccio Gucci.
