Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, famously known as Coco, began her career in fashion at the age of 18 when she took a job with a local tailor in France. Chanel was taught at an early age to sew when she would vacation with relatives. She soon took up design as a hobby and began with hats. In 1913 she opened her first shop in Paris selling raincoats and jackets. After this shop went out of business, Chanel opened other shops in France expanding her collection to women’s sportswear and soon her designs were worn by French celebrities and American aristocrats. Retiring in 1939 and moving away, Chanel returned to Paris in 1954 and re-established herself in fashion and grew her empire. In 1955 she introduced the famous quilted leather handbag.
