In 1856, Thomas Burberry opened a shop in England focused on outerwear, even inventing gabardine in the 1880’s. Gaining immense popularity Burberry was commissioned to design coats for the British army to reflect contemporary warfare, and in 1914 he designed the now popular “trench coat”. To this design he later added the widely recognized Burberry check. Only in the 1960’s was the check print added to accessories and now is their signature look.
